Dysautonomia refers to a group of disorders that affect the autonomic nervous system. POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) is the most common type of dysautonomia.
Medical research confirms that dysautonomia, including POTS, is a common effect of underlying disease, ranging from diabetes to hormonal dysregulation, post-COVID syndrome, and other viral infections.
But because symptoms can vary from moderate to severe, may come and go, and may affect multiple organ systems, dysautonomia is often misdiagnosed or overlooked.
At Market Place Naturopathic, we specialize in evidence-based integrative medicine and naturopathic approaches to uncover the root causes of conditions like POTS. We then take a personalized, holistic approach to your care that promotes healing on all levels.
Here’s more from our team about dysautonomia and POTS.
Dysautonomia is a broad term describing dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The ANS regulates vital, unconscious processes such as:
There’s also evidence that the ANS plays a significant role in the inflammatory (immune) response to viral and bacterial pathogens.
When the ANS doesn’t function properly, a person may experience dizziness, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, brain fog, digestive issues, and even fainting spells. These symptoms can vary subtly depending on the type of dysautonomia.
For instance, POTS, one of the most common forms, occurs when standing up causes your heart rate to increase by more than 30 beats per minute (or above 120 bpm) without a significant drop in blood pressure.
This sudden change can cause dizziness, nausea, fatigue, and sometimes anxiety-like sensations. While POTS can affect anyone, it is most common in women aged 15-50 and often appears after viral illnesses, hormonal changes, significant stress, or physical trauma.
The exact cause of dysautonomia varies. For some, it develops after infections such as COVID-19, leading to what’s often called post-viral dysautonomia.
Others may develop it due to autoimmune conditions, connective tissue disorders such as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, or nutrient deficiencies that affect nervous system function.
At Market Place Naturopathic, we take a whole-person approach to understanding these conditions. Instead of focusing solely on symptoms, we explore why the autonomic nervous system is out of balance.
This perspective opens the door to identifying and treating root causes.
Integrative and naturopathic treatment for POTS and dysautonomia is highly individualized and designed to support the body’s self-regulating processes.
Therapies our team may recommend include:
Optimizing electrolyte levels (sodium, potassium, magnesium) and ensuring adequate hydration can stabilize blood volume and improve energy levels. This may be accomplished through diet and/or IV nutritional therapy.
Gentle movement, compression garments, and gradual reconditioning exercises can help retrain the cardiovascular system.
Yoga, breathwork, and meditation support the parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) system, improving nervous system resilience.
Identifying hormonal imbalances, adrenal dysfunction, or chronic infections may uncover hidden triggers.
Targeted therapies may include anti-inflammatory nutrition, IV nutritional therapy, ozone therapy, and supplements to support mitochondrial and nervous system health.
